Information Regarding Changes in Licensing for Masters Level Psychologists

Legislation passed during the 1999 Session created a new level of independent clinical licensure for Masters Level Psychologists in the State of Kansas.  This is to notify you of the options open to those currently licensed as LMLP's.  The options are:

1. Transition to Clinical Psychotherapist

If fully licensed as a Master Level Psychologist in Kansas before 7/1/00 you have the opportunity to transition your license to the new Clinical Psychotherapist. This is a NOT "grandparenting" process, all applicants will need to meet the qualifications for Clinical Psychotherapist.  Those qualifications are as followes:

- Licensed or Registered in Kansas before 7/1/00, and
- Actively engaged in practice as a LMLP within 5 years prior to 7/1/00, and
- Competent to diagnosis and treat mental disorders as documented by 2 of the following:

- 9 transcripted graduate credit hours in diagnosis and treatment or passing the national, clinical examination
- 3 years of clinical experience in a community mental health center, state hospital, or other settings with experience in diagnosis and treatment.
- Attestation from one professional, licensed to diagnosis and treat mental disorders in independent practice or licensed to practice medicine or surgery, that the applicant is competent to diagnosis and treat mental disorders.

If you wish to receive an application to transition to the clinical level download the form from "Forms" in the topics listed under Masters Level Psychologist.

2. Maintain current license as a Master’s Level Psychologist

Licensed master’s level psychologists who were licensed prior to 7/1/00 may elect to maintain their current level of licensure.  After January 1, 2002, those with who are licensed as masters level psychologists may only practice under the direction of a licensed clinical psychotherapist, licensed clinical professional  counselor,a licensed psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker, a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, or a person licensed to practice medicine or surgery.  If you wish to remain as a Licensed Masters Level Psychologist, please notify the Board office of your decision, and your license will continue to be renewed as a Licensed Masters Level Psychologist.
