Information Regarding Changes in Licensing for Masters Level Psychologists

Legislation passed during the 1999 Session created a new level of independent clinical licensure for Masters Level Psychologists in the State of Kansas.  This  is to notify you of the options open to those currently licensed as LMLP's.  The options are:

    1.    Transition to Clinical Psychotherapist
If fully licensed as a Master Level Psychologist in Kansas before 7/1/00 you have the opportunity to transition your license to the new Clinical Psychotherapist.          This is a NOT "grandparenting" process, all applicants will need to meet the qualifications for Clinical Psychotherapist.  Those qualifications are as followed:

If you wish to receive an application to transition to the clinical level download the form from "Forms" in the topics listed under Masters Level Psychologist.
    2. Maintain current license as a Master’s Level Psychologist
Licensed master’s level psychologists who were licensed prior to 7/1/00 may elect to maintain their current level of licensure.  After January 1, 2002, those with who are licensed as masters level psychologists may only practice under the direction of a licensed clinical psychotherapist, licensed clinical professional  counselor,a licensed psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker, a licensed clinical marriage and family therapist, or a person licensed to practice medicine or surgery.  If you wish to remain as a Licensed Masters Level Psychologist, please notify the Board office of your decision, and your license will continue to be renewed as a Licensed Masters Level Psychologist.

Renewal information

        On-Line Renewal

Licenses are issued for a 2-year period, and expire on the last day of the month.  Renewals notices are sent to the last known address we have in the licensure database, and are sent approximately 90 days prior to expiration of the license. Renewals will not be processed prior to 90 days of the license expiration date.  The notices are a courtesy sent to licensees, but the responsibility to renew a license on time, remains with the licensee.

All renewals require 50 hours of continuing education earned in the 2 years preceding renewal. The required number of hours needed are pro-rated for periods of renewal which are less than the full 2 years. Hours must be obtained in at least 2 of the 3 categories of continuing education activities.   Beginning with all licenses that expire on or after January 1, 2002, there will be an additional 6 hours of "diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders" required of the Masters and Clinical levels of licensure.
